Siero, parent company of Siero Lam, has developed a complete value chain model, ranging from forest management to primary and secondary wood processing. The company has consolidated a strategy based on the proximity of the resource, chestnut wood, while also benefiting from a strong position in other hardwood species. It currently exports around 50% of its total production.

Within this ecosystem, Siero Lam represents the most advanced link in the chain. Founded in 1995, the company embodies the natural evolution of a family group with more than 80 years of experience, whose activity began with Maderas Siero; today, it is one of the benchmark sawmills for hardwoods in the Iberian Peninsula.

The group has focused on process integration and on creating value at every stage. This industrial approach not only ensures supply security, but also enables the company to respond more precisely to the demands of an increasingly demanding market in terms of quality, traceability, and technical performance.

Sustainable forest management

Chestnut is the dominant native species in the forests of Asturias, a region in northern Spain. The Siero group currently manages 300 hectares. Chestnut offers a particularly attractive combination for professionals: natural durability, good stability, and a warm appearance suitable for both structural and decorative applications.

Beyond its technical qualities, chestnut is part of a local sourcing approach. At a time when the sector is seeking to reduce its environmental footprint, the use of a local resource managed under FSC® and PEFC certifications reinforces the consistency of the model. The wood is not only processed; it is managed from its very origin.

The group is taking a further step in its commitment to sustainable development by launching chestnut reforestation projects aimed at restoring the typical forest landscape of the Asturias region (Spain). These projects, scheduled for 2026 and 2027, include the planting of selected chestnut trees over an initial area of 25 hectares spread across different municipalities in Asturias. The creation of new forests is part of the company’s environmental and territorial responsibility strategy. These decisions are also aligned with the company’s decarbonization plans.

From raw material to processed product

It is in secondary processing that Siero Lam fully deploys its potential. The company has gradually developed a product range intended for professionals, combining solutions that offer a high degree of customized adaptability. Solid non-finger-jointed panels and finger-jointed glued laminated panels, screens, finger-jointed cladding, battens and scantlings, finger-jointed decking, and curtain walls, among others, are part of an offering whose technical highlight lies in structural glued laminated timber. In this field, the company has invested in optimizing its production lines, thereby improving the precision and consistency of the final product. Finger-jointed glued laminated chestnut beams, CE-marked in accordance with ETA 13/0646 and certified by the MPA Stuttgart Otto Graf Institut, clearly illustrate this evolution: a product still relatively uncommon on the European market, but with growing potential in the field of sustainable construction.

Innovating to adapt, not to transform the material

Rather than breaking with tradition, the Siero group has chosen a gradual innovation approach closely linked to the material itself. Collaboration with CETEMAS makes it possible to adjust processes, improve productivity, and meet new regulations without losing sight of the nature of the product. This approach translates into a strategic direction capable of carrying out complex innovation projects without sacrificing efficiency.

Clean energy. Decarbonization strategy.

The group’s business model is part of the circular economy; its commitment is to ensure optimal use of resources and minimal environmental impact. By-products that cannot be transformed are converted into biomass; this clean energy is then used in wood drying processes. The Siero group is continuing its decarbonization process with the commissioning of a new photovoltaic plant scheduled for 2026. This important milestone further confirms its commitment to clean energy. This plant will complement the one already installed at Maderas Siero. It includes 2,900 photovoltaic panels and covers 34% of the energy needs of its factories.

From industry to architecture

The transition to larger-scale projects is taking shape through initiatives such as the Ombú building in Madrid, developed by Acciona and designed by Foster+Partners in collaboration with Ortiz León Arquitectos. In this rehabilitation project, chestnut wood – particularly finger-jointed glued laminated beams – is integrated into an architectural proposal focused on reuse and efficiency. For Siero Lam, this also represents a validation: the ability of a local species to meet the demands of contemporary architecture.
